Pomology Department

Professional training has a solid biological foundation, masters the basic theory of horticulture, basic knowledge and professional skills, and can be engaged in horticulture teaching and scientific research in related fields and departments; production and promotion; management and scientific research of academic elite innovative talents; and innovative entrepreneurial technology leader and social development management compound talents.

Pomology Department, College of Horticulture, Northwest A&F University (Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Fruit Trees) was merged by the Department of Horticulture, Northwest A&F University, and the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Fruit Trees in September 2004. It is one of the earliest disciplines to recruit graduate students in China. This department is based on undergraduate teaching, taking into account the basics of research, basic research application, and application of scientific and technological achievements. It mainly undertakes the courses of general theory of fruit tree cultivation, fruit tree breeding, horticultural plant breeding, plant tissue culture, general theory of biotechnology, experimental design and analysis, and introduction to horticulture. The breeding of new varieties such as apple, pear, peach, kiwifruit, almond, persimmon, apricot, cherry, jujube, and strawberry, the biotechnological breeding of apple, grape, peach, and kiwifruit, the high-quality, safe, and efficient cultivation techniques of apple, pear, and kiwifruit, and the cultivation of protected fruit trees were mainly studied.

Department of Vegetable Science

The Department of Vegetable Science, Horticulture College, Northwest A&F University (Shaanxi Vegetable Research Institute) is a unit specialized in vegetable teaching and scientific research. Undergraduate teaching is based on basic research, basic research application, and application of scientific and technological achievements in vegetable science. This department consists of a vegetable teaching and research team, a Chinese cabbage genetic breeding team, a cabbage genetic breeding team, a watermelon and melon genetic breeding team, a pepper genetic breeding team, a pumpkin and zucchini genetic breeding team, a tomato genetic breeding team, a cucumber genetic breeding team, and a vegetable facility cultivation research team.

Ornamental Horticulture

The Department of Ornamental Horticulture, School of Horticulture, Northwest A & F University, was founded in 1987. Engaged in basic research, applied basic research, applied research and transformation of scientific and technological achievements of ornamental horticulture; it mainly undertakes the teaching tasks of horticulture specialty ornamental horticulture direction, facility agriculture science and engineering specialty and leisure agriculture-related undergraduate courses and graduates related courses. The research content includes genetic engineering research; germplasm resources and variety improvement of landscape plants; physiology and ecology of landscape plants; plant configuration and landscaping; family gardening; and so on.

Agricultural facility science and engineering

This major has the basic knowledge of biology, the environment, engineering and other disciplines, master the basic theory, basic knowledge and professional skills of facility design and construction, environmental regulation, agricultural park planning, and facility crop standardized production management. Ability to engage in teaching, engineering and design, promotion and development, management and scientific research in facility agriculture, and related fields.

The Facilities Agriculture Science and Engineering Department of Horticulture College of Northwest A&F University is a unit specialized in facilities agriculture teaching and scientific research. In 2003, Northwest A&F University took the lead in adding a new undergraduate major in “facility agriculture science and engineering” in China. Facility agriculture science and engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, environmental science, and engineering. The professional bioscience mainly includes the growth and management of vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, and other crops; environmental engineering mainly emphasizes the interaction and regulation of light, temperature, humidity, gas, and soil factors. The engineering discipline mainly involves the optimization design of greenhouse structures, the design of environmental regulations, the selection and calculation of building materials, and construction technology.

Tea Science

The professional training has good scientific and cultural literacy and a solid biological foundation, master the basic theory, basic knowledge, and basic skills of tea science, food science, and informatics. Understanding the frontier of science with innovation, entrepreneurial consciousness, and ability, and can be in agriculture, industry, commerce, management, and other fields, or universities, research institutes, other administrative institutions, or related enterprises competent in tea industry related production, processing, and management; tea culture communication; scientific research and teaching work of academic elite innovative talents; innovative entrepreneurial technology leader and social development management compound talents.

The Department of Tea Science, College of Horticulture, Northwest A&F University was founded in 2004. The Tea Research Institute of Northwest A&F University was established in the Department of Tea Science. The National Tea Industry Technology System Experimental Station, Xixiang Tea Experimental Demonstration Station, Northwest A & F University, Jingyang Fu Tea Research and Development Center, and four school-enterprise teaching practice bases were established outside the school. The above conditions provide a sufficient guarantee for experimental teaching and practice of tea science.

According to the school-running idea of the combination of production, teaching, and research in our university, the Department of Tea Science takes serving agriculture as its guiding ideology, takes solving the key problems in the production of tea as its own responsibility, and takes promoting the development of the tea industry in Shaanxi and Northwest China as its goal. The main research directions are mainly focused on tea biotechnology and genetic breeding; tea processing and quality control; tea physiological ecology; and comprehensive utilization of tea resources in Shaanxi Province.
